At the beginning of the season, all the excitement and football talk was about whether the Kansas City Chiefs would be able to win an unprecedented third Super Bowl in a row. Even the likes of Tom Brady were unable to do that and it would be a massive achievement if Patrick Mahomes is able to lead his team to a “three-peat”.

The NFL is one of the most balanced leagues in pro sports, however. There are plenty of other teams to keep an eye on if you are thinking of making your own predictions. All the best NFL betting sites will have their own opinions but we thought we would take a look for ourselves and see if we can identify a likely championship winner.
We are now over halfway through the regular season and the most striking thing to notice is how wide open the league seems this year. Although the Chiefs are looking very good, there are a number of other teams making their own claims for future glory. But with everyone seeming to be able to beat everyone else, is there a definite winning pick for Super Bowl LIX?
Where else to begin than with the Chiefs? Not only has Kansas City won the last two Super Bowls, but it has also won the AFC West divisional title every year since 2016. Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes have dominated the NFL for a while now and the Chiefs have to be considered the favorites to win yet again in New Orleans next February.
Even though the Chiefs have raced to a commanding winning record this year, there have been a few pundits talking about the cracks in the armor. Although anything can happen in the playoffs, the biggest danger to the Chiefs winning it all again would be for them to relinquish that divisional crown. That would mean going on the road in the postseason and that could pose a few problems depending on the opponent.
All that being said, the Kansas City Chiefs are undoubtedly the team to beat once again this year – and if a team does manage to do that, it may well be in the championship game itself.
This is where things get a little more interesting. A quick glance across the entire league at the moment will tell you that there are very few other teams pushing ahead of the pack. “The pack” consists of a range of teams, mostly very familiar with postseason play – and for that reason, there is a whole host of worthy challengers.
In the AFC there are a few teams that would dearly love to be given the chance to represent the conference in the place of Chiefs next year. The Baltimore Ravens are probably the pick of the bunch, with a fit and healthy Lamar Jackson the key to continued success and any deep run into the playoffs.
The Texans and the Bills are the other teams that could really do something from the AFC. The ability of their respective QBs, C.J. Stroud and Josh Allen are just as important to their chances as with the Ravens. Stroud, in particular, looks like being a real star of the future while Allen really needs to push the Bills to glory soon before Buffalo’s title window disappears.
If anything, the NFC has even more likely challengers to the Chiefs’ crown. The Detroit Lions surprised a lot of people last year by making it to the conference championship and have started this campaign in a better way than the 49ers, the team that beat them in that game. The Eagles, like the Bills, have been knocking at the door for a while now while ultimately disappointing in the end. But the addition of Saquon Barkley has given Philly another option in the offense and Jalen Hurts is still one of the best QBs in the game. If home advantage can be achieved for the playoffs, the infamous Philadelphia fans might be able to influence the way the games go too.

With so much of the regular season still to play and the league proving to be incredibly tight across all of the divisions, there are still a good number of other teams that have the potential to upset the predictions and provide us with a surprise Super Bowl winner. None more so than the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Washington Commanders.
The Steelers find themselves in a dogfight of a division against the Ravens, Bengals, and Browns. Not much was expected from Mike Tomlin’s team before the season began but it has kept up with the best in the AFC and looks a better bet than the Bengals who have fallen away a little recently. It will be a tough task for Pittsburgh to overcome the Chiefs especially – but Tomlin has the experience and the know-how to go all the way.
The Commanders are the real surprise team of the season so far. The glory days of the 1980s and 90s are a long time ago now and there has only been one solitary postseason game for the franchise in the last eight years. But a new leadership structure has done wonders with this team – with Jayden Daniels, in particular, excelling as a rookie quarterback. Talk of Super Bowl success might seem a little premature but this is one team to keep a close eye on.
Although there are some very good teams positioning themselves to take a crack at the championship this season, it is still the Kansas City Chiefs that everyone has to beat. There is so much experience of big games and clutch situations that is difficult to look past them for another title.
